Hailing from west London via Canada and Rwanda, Tanya Auclair’s musical upbringing straddled very different worlds. Drawing on influences as wide-ranging as Bongo Joe Coleman, The Staple Singers and Laurie Anderson, her open instinctive approach shows in her eclectic, infectious production in a mix of playful DIY drums, layers of vocals, intricate melodies and electronica.
Her distinctive sound is characterised by its minimal trappings, primal rhythms and beguiling melodies. She builds her songs live on stage, sampling her voice with a loop pedal, playing ukulele, guitar and percussion. It is rare for such a new artist to have an original, established sound.
