De La Soul
Formed in Long Island, New York in 1987, hip hop trio De La Soul wielded inscrutable samples, socially conscious lyrics and unfathomably deep grooves to transcend the expectations of late 1980s hip hop and become one of the genre’s most influential groups.
Their first release “3 Feet High and Rising” is considered one of the most innovative and widely successful hip hop albums. A collage of bouncing beats, quirky samples and deft rhymes championing peace and harmony – values forgotten in the wake of the gangster rap boom – it was hailed as ingenious and revolutionary.
Subsequent releases “De La Soul is Dead”, “Buhloone Mindstate, “Stakes is High”, “Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump”, “AOI: Bionix” and “The Grind Date” have cemented the trio at the forefront of alternative hip hop.
